Meeting with Liberian recording artist Faithvonic was all that, and more! I spent a year carefully planning for this meeting and I was sure it would be nothing but spectaculars. Faithvonic is one of those all-around beautiful people, who carries herself with such grace and class that you would want to invite her to all your “girls night out” activities.
This past December 2019, I interviewed Faithvonic at the Palm Springs Resort in Congo Town Tubman Blvd., Monrovia. We talked about what it is to be a young Liberian woman trying to make things happen in a nation that is struggling to have a booming economy. We discussed our humanitarian work targeting youths in Liberia. Also, how we are constantly working to improve the image of Liberia’s entertainment industry, especially since, the entertainment industry in Liberia is new and unorganized.
We connected immediately as women in the media, her as a musician and me as a tv personality, interesting enough, we both spoke the same dialect, Bassa. I got a chance to hear some of her new music and it was “correct!” We talked about initiatives we both are leading. I shared with her my in-school mentoring club called “The Big Jue Association,” and her charity “Don’t Cover Up.”
I was happy to learn that “Don’t Cover Up” is leading an awareness campaign focused on prevalent issues impacting young girls in Liberia – domestic violence, sex for grades, teenage pregnancy and rape. In partnership with rape victim organizations, they work to provide social services to victims and their families. And at times, provide funding for girls to continue their education away from harassment.
