A craving for Liberian food led me to discover “Deddeh’s Kitchen.” I stumbled upon Deddeh’s while driving around Providence looking to tamper my craving for Liberian food. I knew eventually I would come across one, since Providence is known to have a large Liberian population. I was right!
My journey ended at Pine Street and Lockwood Street. I looked around and spotted a small red and black building that looked as if it was previously painted white. I parked my car next to the building and walked inside. Upon opening the building’s door, I encountered a familiar aroma – YES Liberian food.
Deddeh’s, a gem in the community. Opened in 2017, Deddeh’s serves all types of customers, especially those that would prefer to order their food and take it home. This was apparent by the two small tables for customers to wait until their order was packed to take-out. Most patrons came in and did just that.
Immediately entering I felt welcomed. I was greeted by Ma Florence “big smile,” and I immediately asked for the menu. Later I found out that Ma Florence is in charge when the owner is handling other business. Ma Florence handed me a menu and I was gleefully surprised by the options on the menu.
The menu included 25 Liberian ethnic food items, including prices for a medium or large plate to select. There were several sections displayed on the menu: Daily Specials, Daily Menu, Made to Order Meals, Side Orders, and even Vegetarian Specials.
I ordered a small plate of Casava Leaf and rice, one fried tilapia fish, and six balls of Kala with four pepper sauce, totaling a fair amount of $14.95. When I arrived home, I took out some larger plates and laid out the food, and discovered the food was still steaming and fresh.
The first dish I tried was the Casava Leaf and rice. The stew was savory, and the taste reminded me of my mother’s cooking.
Next, I had the Kala and pepper sauce. The Kala tasted soft and doughy, almost like a New England Dough Boy. I pulled the Kala in half and dipped one piece in the pepper sauce and launched it into my mouth. My initial thought was, WOW. I can taste the pepper sauce without feeling like my mouth is on fire. The sauce had a small hint of spices, including unions, garlic, and tomatoes. I also tried the sauce with the fired tilapia fish – this is when I fell in love! The sauce gave the fish a sweeter taste that enhanced the meatiness of the fish, which I enjoyed!
Would I go back to Deddeh’s Kitchen for a second order? Absolutely!
The service was fast, the staff were friendly, food was good, and the price was reasonable.
